A’IBOM GOVERNOR’S CUP: SUPER 12 KICKS-OFF SATURDAY

…as defending champions Nsit Ubium take on Ikot Abasi

The 2023 Akwa Ibom State Governor’s Cup has entered the crucial stage, “The Super 12,” involving the top four teams from the preliminary round played across the three Senatorial Districts.

At the draw ceremony conducted at the VIP Lounge of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium Uyo, the twelve qualified teams were divided into two groups of six teams each.

Group A has Nsit Ubium, Ikot Abasi, Essien Udim, Ikot Ekpene, Urue Offong Oruko and Uyo while Group B houses Onna, Obot Akara, Ikono, Ibeno, Ibiono Ibom and Uruan local government areas.

According to the Draw Master, Elder Paul Bassey, the second round of the competition tagged “Super 12” will kick off on Saturday, November 4, with all the matches to be played at the Uyo Township Stadium, adding that the top four teams from the two groups will qualify to the quarterfinals.

In his remarks, the State Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Sir Monday Uko thanked the State Governor, Umo Eno for approving the competition and all the local government chairmen for their support to their teams and commitment towards the successful conduct of the Governor’s Cup.

The Commissioner also commended the Akwa Ibom State Football Normalization Committee for a successful organization and completion of the first round of the competition and expressed confident for a better outing in the Super 12.

The draw ceremony had in attendance members of the state executive council, members of the state House of Assembly, local government chairmen and their representatives, permanent secretary of the ministry of Youth Development and Sports, Directors of the ministry, team managers of various local government areas as well as football stakeholders in the state.
