Gabrielle Monique Union-Wade has become the latest celebrity to abandon X (formerly Twitter) following this year’s US election.
In a farewell tweet on Friday evening, the Hollywood star expressed concerns about “the return of volatile figures” — although she didn’t mention names — and a change to X’s terms of services. She said these are the two reasons she is exiting the app.
The 52-year-old film star also argued that the platform has shifted away from its founding principles of “authentic connections, true engagement, and creative expression” and towards policies that “compromise user privacy and trust”.
“Platforms like X were founded on authentic connections, true engagement and creative expression, all anchored in respect for user privacy and trust,” the post reads in part.
“Yet with the recent and upcoming changes to the terms of service — and the return of volatile figures — I find myself at a crossroads, facing a direction I can no longer fully support.
“I am committed to engaging in spaces that truly value inclusivity, respect and integrity in the digital word. Sometimes, that means recognizing the last straw and knowing when to step away.”
The actress also called on her fans to follow her on Instagram, Threads, TikTok, Bluesky, Spill, and Facebook.
Union joins a growing list of high-profile departures from X, including Don Lemon, Joy Reid, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Stephen King.
The departures follow Elon Musk’s support for Donald Trump, who won the 2024 presidential election, defeating Kamala Harris.
Musk’s involvement with Trump’s campaign and his subsequent appointment as co-head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have sparked controversy.
