Two prison inmates d!e of cholera in Lagos

A cholera outbreak in Badagry has claimed two lives and left five others hospitalized, according to Olatunde Bakare, Medical Director of the General Hospital, Badagry.

Bakare reported on Thursday, July 11, that the victims were brought to the hospital by officials from the Correctional Centre in the town. On July 9th, at approximately 7:00 p.m., six inmates from the centre were admitted, with one inmate arriving deceased and another succumbing to the illness the following morning.

“Laboratory tests confirmed that they had cholera, and they were hospitalized in the emergency section of the hospital,” Bakare stated. “Another inmate was brought in the following day, making five patients currently receiving treatment.”

One of the patients has since been treated and discharged. Bakare noted a swift response from the Lagos State Ministry of Health, which dispatched monitoring teams of doctors and environmental service officers to both the prison and the General Hospital, Badagry, along with necessary medications.

“The ministry provided intravenous fluids, and consumables, and implemented environmental improvement and water treatment measures. This has led to a decline in new cases and significant improvements in the clinical condition of those admitted,” he added.
