DAILY HOPE DEVOTIONAL: JANUARY 18 YOU CAN COME OUT OF THE PIT (3) Scripture: Job 33: 26, 28 – 30; Psalm 40: 1 – 2

This third and concluding part on the series of “You Can Come Out of The Pit” aims at offering steps to take so that one comes out of the pit dug for him/her by evil forces. In this discussion, the evil pit symbolizes the “bottomless Deep”. This could mean the endless sufferings, recurring sicknesses, perennial poverty and related issues. We as Christians can do something to come out of all these.

The principal thing to do, so as to come out of evil pits, is prayer. Anyone in evil pit has to pray to God so as to come of it. Elihu, one of the friends of Job told Job this as seen in Job 33: 28, 30. So, the first step to take so as to come out of your evil pits is confess your possible sins to God and ask that He pulls you out of the pits (Job 33: 26, 28 – 30).

The Psalmist said in Psalm 40: 2

“He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me firm place to stand.” King David had prayed to God for help in Psalm 39: 12 and had a period of waiting patiently on God (Psa. 40: 1). Then God lifted him from the slimy pit. We Christians can do just what King David did when we found that we are in an evil pit.

We should not pray to be lifted out of the evil pit dug for us by our enemies. We are to pray that they fall into the evil pits dug for us. King David said this in Psa. 57: 6, see also Proverbs 26: 27). The beloved, do not close your mouth when you discover you are not fulfilling the purposes God has for you. Cry out to God for help. David said: – “I will cry out to God Most High, to God who will fulfill His purpose for me” (Psa. 57: 2 – Africa Study Bible). Fellow Christians, know that whoever dug a pit for you aims at killing you.

As an individual, if you discover you are in the evil pits of the enemies, tell God to pull you out in prayers. Elihu told Job that it is God who keeps a man’s soul from the pit and his life from perishing by sword” (Job 33: 18). You are not permitted to close your lips while being in the evil pits of the enemies. Prayerfully tell God to rescue you from the pit, from the mire and stops you from falling into them. Ask God in prayer to deliver you from all who hate you. The Psalmist did this in Psalm 69: 14. God will rescue you too if you really pray to Him. Happy are you if you do this!

Taking Action:

Think over your past life experiences and see if you have been making same efforts over and over and progress had eluded you. You are in evil pits. Use all you have heard about evil pits so far to pray and pull out of the pits.
